1944 in the Press

As part of the 80th anniversary of June 12 and the Liberation, ANACR and the Musée de la Résistance de Pernes les Fontaines (Resistance Museum, Pernes-les-Fontaines) are offering a year-long, month-by-month look at 1944 as reported in the press, in authorized and underground newspapers.

As early as October 17, 1940, the Paris Prefect of Police "forbids manufacturers, merchants and wholesalers to sell duplicating machines and paper likely to be used for making circulars or mimeographed leaflets without authorization issued by the police commissioners".

Daily newspapers and magazines were subject to strict censorship, and many were banned. Those that continued to appear communicated for the Nazis and the collaborating French state.

Throughout the Occupation, courageous printers and members of the Resistance managed to keep the French population informed, combat fear and prepare for a return to the Republic, despite surveillance of premises, paper and ink quotas and curfews...

Les Editions de Minuit, founded in 1941 by J. Bruller, Vercors and P. de Lescure, published 21 works during the Occupation, risking the lives of writers, printers, stitchers and distributors.

This month-by-month exhibition retraces the events of 1944 in the authorized and underground press.

All year round :
- January, February, March, October, November, December: Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 4:30pm, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2pm to 4:30pm.
- April, May, June, September: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 5pm, Tuesday and Thursday, 2pm to 5pm.
- July, August: daily, 10am to 12:30pm and 2:30pm to 6pm.
