Tourist service in Avignon :
Scène conventionnée d'intérêt national art, enfance, jeunesse. LE TOTEM offers a regular program of shows for young audiences and families all year round.
Created in 1983 to offer a venue dedicated to young audiences at the Avignon Off Festival, Totem, formerly known as the Maison du Théâtre pour Enfants, has gradually grown and developed into a theater with a permanent activity.
Today, Le Totem is an association offering a range of activities dedicated to children and young people from the earliest age and to families, with a program of shows, the implementation of artistic and cultural education activities in conjunction with partners in the areas in which it operates (Avignon, Greater Avignon and the Vaucluse département), support for creation through company residencies and production grants, coordination of the Festo Pitcho festival and organization of a referent program as part of the Avignon Off Festival.
Le Totem is an arts, children and youth center with a structuring role in the cultural and artistic landscape for young audiences. Its role in supporting creation, and the high profile it gives to companies programmed as part of the Festival Off d'Avignon among professionals in the sector, gives Le Totem an important role in the distribution of works dedicated to young audiences, both nationally and internationally.
Today's creation for children and young people is one of the richest and most abundant in the diversity of proposals and approaches devised to bring young people into contact with the rest of the world.
The multiplicity and mix of aesthetics, the audacity and inventiveness of the artists who make up the current landscape, make creation for young people an art form that has managed to extricate itself from the minor art in which it was confined, to earn its letters of nobility. Artists who work with children and young people know how to resonate with our society. Their artistic gesture provides a symbolic, philosophical and political echo of our world that is absolutely necessary.
It's an area of freedom that must be defended and promoted, so that artists' words continue to be a source of reflection, pleasure, sharing and astonishment.
It is in this space of freedom that Totem places its project.
Choose a show
To ensure that everyone gets the most out of the show, we invite you to respect the minimum age indicated for each performance.
However, there is no maximum age. Because while the shows we host tell the same story to everyone, they pick each of us up - toddlers and older children alike - in a different place.
