Vaison-la-Romaine
The Upper Town - Medieval City
Tourist service in Vaison-la-Romaine :
After the Roman bridge, walk along the ramparts and past the belfry topped by a bell tower, discover the Upper Town, a perched settlement fortified by a double wall and dominated by the château comtal.
2 gates gave access to the town: "la Porte Vieille", also known as "la Porte de St Quenin", below the Belfry, and to the east, "la Porte Neuve", which was closed at the slightest alarm between 10 pm and 4 am.
From the Place du Vieux Marché (Old Market Square), the main market square in the Upper Town until the 19th century, observe the "fern leaf" facing of the wall that closed off the Jewish quarter.
From the "Planet", in front of the church, enjoy a superb view of the Ouvèze and Mont Ventoux. Enjoy the poetry of the old cobbled streets with their evocative names (rue des Fours, rue de
l'Evêché...), punctuated by old mansions and squares with Comtadine fountains.
