Beaumes de Venise, is a Green Holiday Resort. It makes an ideal starting point to explore the Côtes du Rhône vineyards, or the Dentelles de Montmirail which is a magnificent playground for walkers and climbers. Beaumes de Venise is also known for its famous sweet wine and its olive oil.
As in many villages in the Dentelles de Montmirail such as Séguret and Gigondas, it is a pleasure to stroll around the old picturesque streets with their alleyways and steps. The village of Beaumes de Venise slopes slightly as it clings to a cliff, sheltering several caves dug out of the rock, the most famous being that of Rocalinaud. There are many remains of its rich past such as the ruins of Durban castle from the twelfth century and the Saracen tower in the middle of the Dentelles de Montmirail.Don't miss the jewel of Romanesque Art in Provence, the Romanesque Notre-Dame-d'Aubune chapel from the eleventh century. In the summer guided tours are organised by the Beaumes de Venise Tourist Office.Because of the quality of its environment and its wine production, Beaumes de Venise holds a "Site Remarquable du Goût " award. It produces the famous Muscat, a sweet wine which is known throughout the whole world. The winegrowers guard the quality of their wines and share their expertise with visitors. Four wheel drive tours, walks and tastings are organised in the vineyards and wine cellars all year round.Around the vineyards there are flourishing olive groves. The velvety, fruity olive oil has received many Concours Général Agricole de Paris awards. Tours of the old La Balméenne oil mill are free and its olive oil which is a tasty holiday souvenir is on sale in the shop!
