Sablet
Village de Sablet
Tourist service in Sablet :
Sablet is seated at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, and camped on its hill of “safre*”.
A little circular village like the shell of a snail, the streets and houses are coiled around the church.
There is no castle in Sablet, because it was never a vassal, it depended directly on the Papacy. The village was protected by a wall built in the 15th century. In the maze of streets, you will see “soustets“ from all eras, and pretty facades.
The « Place Yvan Audouard » is named after the journalist, writer, and humorist, loyal to Sablet and the Journée du Livre (Book Festival). It is adorned with a fountain and its little wash-house.
Follow the « Montée de l’Eglise » (ascent of the church) which takes you up to the Saint Nazaire church, with its heavy steeple, crowned by a bell tower.
At the entrance of the village, on the Route de Carpentras, stand two chapels : St Roch, dedicated to one of the village’s patron saints, and St Nazaire, erected by the inhabitants to thank the saint for sparing the village from the great plague of 1720.
*safre : Zaffre is the provençal word used by masons to describe a native
material of stone and sand.
VILLAGE SECRET
Jean Raspail, the writer, established the consulate of Patagonia here. He gave himself the prestigious title of consul of the southern tip of the South America, an ephemeral kingdom that was never recognized, often referred to as the “fantasy kingdom.”
