Cathédrale Saint-Siffrein
Tourist service in Carpentras :
The Saint-Siffrein Cathedral in Carpentras was built between 1405 and 1519, and therefore took over 100 years to build, which explains the diversity of the styles. It was built in the same place that 3 other churches had been built before it (you can still see the vestiges of the 12th century Romanesque chruch on the northern side of the chevet. The cathedral illustrates the Southern Gothic architectural style. You can enter the cathedral through two doors, one known as the 'Jewish Door', on the southern side, a beautiful example of flamboyant Gothic, and the man door, which is on the classical façade which was added in the 17th century. The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated, with a lovely set of wrought iron gates, marble altars from the 17th and 18th centuries, paintings by Mignard, Parrocel, Duplessis, a primitive from the Avignon School, and a beautiful set of gilded statues by the great Comtadin sculptor, Jacques Bernus (1650-1728). Guided visit for children and adults on request (book 15 days ahead).Dates and times
