The Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction was founded in the 14th century by Pope Innocent VI who entrusted the decoration of his personal chapel to Matteo Giovanetti, the painter of the frescoes at the Palace of the Popes.
The three cloisters, lined with forty cells and surrounded by gardens, made this the grandest chartreuse in France. You can still visit the old chapel and the church with the tomb of Pope Innocent VI, the cloisters and the cells of the Carthusian monks
