Avignon Synagogue
Tourist service in Avignon :
This religious building which was rebuilt in 1846 after a fire bears witness to the centuries-old presence of a Jewish community in Avignon. The former ghetto was located in what is now the upper Balance district. Since 1990, it has been classified as a Historic Monument.
The current synagogue was rebuilt by the architect Joseph-Auguste Joffroy. The prayer hall consists of a neoclassical rotunda supported by white columns. You will notice the absence of Elijah’s seat, a specific feature of Comtadin synagogues.
