Paper is made on site, printed or sold to watercolourists, calligraphers, publishers and other interested parties. The paper-maker works on site. He can be seen at work by the tanks, which you can see from the gallery which takes you across the work space, from which y ou can see the water wheel, the tanks, the old machines, and the piles of rags from which the paper is made.
A bit of background: the first paper mill in Provence was opened in Carpentras in 1374. However, Fontaine de Vaucluse became the biggest paper making site over the following centuries. The arrival of the Popes in Avignon in the 1300's doubtlessly had an influence on the thriving paper production in the area.
